It was serious and complex − far from simple!
Before discovering Miksang Photography, Hèlen practiced the conceptual approach learned at art school. Each project began with an idea, which she worked out with her camera and supported with a conceptual narrative.
This creative process was a mix of research and spontaneous inspiration, but over time, led to exhaustion and discouraged her rather than inspired her.
Direct & vivid
When she met Miksang Photography (2006), she was immediately captivated.
Everything she was involved with—photography, art, mindfulness meditation, and Buddhism—came together in an accessible and poetic way.
From complexity to simplicity
For Hèlen, starting with Miksang was like tumbling in a washing machine. The simplicity of Miksang turned her trained conceptual thinking and searching for 'great results' upside down: the complexities of a conceptual mind were still working at full speed.
She quickly understood the Miksang theory and vision, mentally, but being struck, letting the ordinary beauty in, coming to a full stop and contemplative photography simply required practice and patience. And above all, relaxing the pressure of having to do something and performing 'great results'.
Over time she gradually found her way in simplicity, discovering the depth and delight of simple & simplicity.
